La Mer Review > The Hydrating Facial (Sheet mask / Tips)

Published by Jasmine Seo

It's La Mer's The Hydrating Facial season again as the temperature outside has gone down dramatically so my skin even on my body started getting itchy from dryness. Dehydrated skin is our worst enemy along with unprotected skin! So I took out my La Mer The Hydrating Facial sheet mask as it's simply uber for hydrating and nourishing. In fact, it's very comparable to La Prairie Swiss Cellular White Illuminating Mask, but they use different textures despite both being sheet masks. And I just feel like The Hydrating Facial, so why not! :) Oh, let me tell you in advance, this mask isn't for every skin type. Those with normal skin type may use the mask in colder seasons, but dry to very dry skin will appreciate the true power of it the most. For oilier skin, I recommend trying out their The Intensive Revitalizing Mask (full review) or Sisley Express Flower Gel Mask (full review) instead.

Scent & Consistency

Do you like the original Creme de La Mer and their The Moisturizing Soft Cream? If yes, then you will love The Hydrating Facial :). Think of it as their Soft Cream in a sheet mask, it really delivers and gives their famous Creme de La Mer finish.

Yes, now you can see what I'm talking about, right? It's the most thick textured treatment in a sheet mask on the market. The sheet mask by itself isn't the most thick compared to La Prairie Swiss Cellular White Illuminating Mask (full review), but it's still on the sturdy and durable side.

It's basically an emulsified version of Creme de La Mer, yet it's very creamy that some might get confused if it's a moisturiser in a sheet mask XD. Well, I've always felt that it is whenever I use the mask as it's truly emollient and gives a similar, but more rich finish.

Even the scent is the same, so you won't have any problem if you love La Mer moisturisers (full review). However, if you are sensitive to fragrance or even pregnant, it may not be the best although it smells quite healing.

Tips / Effectiveness

La Mer The Hydrating Facial is one of the intensive S.O.S treatments for skin in drought and harsh weather condition. It's fool-proof and effective, delivering a true home spa ritual experience. Although it brings instant comfort and glow to skin, it's not the best under make-up or even sunscreen as it leaves skin very oily unless you ditch the rest of goodies in the packaging. It's best to be used overnight specifically for skin regeneration.

It contains so much serum in the packaging that my skin always already feels very hydrated and soothed. Even the serum remaining in the package after taking the mask out could be sufficient really. And I'm only talking about one zone.

Imagine, if you use those goodies on the tray from both the upper and lower zones, yes, you will feel probably feel that you're done using the mask XD. The only downside is that it's really hard to get the serum out of the tray fully, so I always feel that quite a bit of expensive serum gets wasted :'(.

Regardless, I always do my best to get the most out of the leftover serum on the tray :3. Anyways, it's up to you if you want to stop there and re-seal the mask, then use it later preferably within the following 24 hours. Or you can even do it the other way around; use the mask first, then seal the goodies on the packaging. Note that there will be more serum leftover once you squeeze out the used mask, which also means that you will have plenty more goodies to layer on top of your skin including face, neck, chest, hands... and even arms!

Although The Hydrating facial comes in two packets consisting of upper and lower zones, I always find that even just one packet is more than enough to quench my skin and slather it on all over my body. If you want to just focus on the face, neck and chest areas, then you will have to keep repeatedly patting and applying the leftovers, layer by layer. I do that when I have the time to spare, but it always ends up taking 30+ minutes on top of the 8 minute masking time, plus pre-conditioning skin with the goodies in the packaging, which also takes about 5-10 minutes. Yes, that's a lot of time, but at least the mask by itself doesn't move around easily so I can do stretching while it's working <3.

It will definitely make you look very oily, so don't let anyone touch your skin and make sure you tie your hair back :). Nevertheless, it hydrates skin for 36-48 hours based on my experience without any moisturiser on top. You won't need to put any other moisturiser as your skin will feel already quite greasy and layered enough. It works great as an après-soleil and après-ski treatment or even for jet-lagged skin as long as your skin isn't reactive to ferments. 8 minute miracle achieveable? Yes, but it comes with a bit of hard work! :P
