We live in a city, so we don't have a constant daily access to huge off-leash dog parks. So we've playing frisbee with our Yuna and Yena at a school playground after school hours or at small inner city parks. Meaning, we mostly play frisbee with our dogs with the leash on.
Border collies are very fast and they can also jump very high. We needed more than just a standard leash, so we got the German made Flexi Retractable Dog Leash for large dogs. They have different sizes with different lengths, but we got Large with 8m long leash mainly due to the nature of our dogs.
Let me tell you, the Large version is heavy to carry, so I let my man carry it most of the time when playing frisbee. Just think of it as if you are doing light weight lifting O_O. However, it works very well when playing fetch and frisbee and we've also noticed that our dogs like it more as they get more freedom to run and jump higher.
The Flexi has 3 possible "states":
- Normal allows the leash to expand and retract freely (up to the length of the leash)
- Holding the button down will lock the leash in place
- Holding the button and then flipping the switch just in front of it will lock the button in place so the leash is locked without needing to hold the button
As you can see from the images, the large Flexi has a wide polyester leash that unwraps. It's surprisingly strong, you just need to be very mindful of where the leash is and whether or not you have it locked to make sure you don't hurt yourself. The smaller Flexi's use a cord which make them much lighter but also easier to break for larger or stronger dogs.
I highly recommend both West Paw Design Zogoflex Zisc Frisbee (full review) and Flexi Explore Retractable Dog Leash as they complement each other and the quality is superb! :D They are approved by Yuna and Yena! ;)
